Small Business Consultant: Local Domain Gold Rush

April 22nd, 2010 by Dexter No comments »

Domain Gold Rush:
Finding The Ultimate Domain Name

Ever wondered why some websites got placed on the first page of Google and all the major search engines for particular keywords, and why yours do not? Well, I don’t have all the answers, and if I had all the pieces I would be the wealthiest man east of the Mississippi river. However, there are a few reasons that are known to be a good first step towards getting your website listed on the first page of Google.

The system of determining which website to put on the first page of the search engine was the original problem that Larry Page, the Google co-founder, was trying to figure out in 1995 for his PhD dissertation. After working at it for several months and not getting anywhere, he recruited his partner Sergey Brin, a fellow Stanford Ph.D. student. Together they started a system called BackRub that was the basis of the current day Google.

Since then, the problem has not gotten any easier as the Internet has exploded and Google themselves have become on of the largest and wealthiest companies in the world. However, many other brainy people have been working on ways to figure out how Google works and how to reverse engineer the results produced by their search engine computers. Here are a few factors about selecting a domain that can increase your chances of getting your website listed on the first page of Google.

With the unlimited reach of the Internet, using a domain name based on a local keyword can prove to be a very valuable strategy. The benefit of getting credit towards your ranking for that keyword is a tremendous additional boost that can put your keyword beyond the reach of global competitors and franchised companies.

Domain Age – If you had selected your domain ten years ago, your domain would have an age of ten years today. For some unknown reason, search engines look at that piece of information and give your domain credit towards a higher ranking. However, if you try to buy the perfect domain today that will give you the benefit of geographic keywords, you will probably find that it has already been taken by your competitors.

Local Domain Name – Most aspects of Search Engine Optimization can be copied by your competitors. For instance, if someone wanted to get more links pointing to their domain name, they can go out and find services that will do that for them. They can always find website programmers to change their onsite Search Engine parameters. Because each domain on the Internet is unique, they cannot readily go out and get the domain name with the keyword in a way that will also represent their business properly. Using a geographic keyword in your domain name is an old secret that have worked for years and still work today. This practice is a carry-over from business names based on geography. With the additional trend towards localization on the Internet, and the proliferation of online map programs, this strategy is quickly growing as a gold rush equal in strength to the California Gold Rush of 1948.

Because most new domains purchased die a quiet death one to five years after been enthusiastically selected, you may just be the beneficiary to “catch” a dying domain moments before it’s deletion and be able to benefit from its age.

There a many “after market” domain name website resellers, including some of the popular ones, like Godaddy.com.To find aged domains, you can simply go to Google and search for “aged domains”. You will see an entire industry of online business just in the business of reselling “used” websites. One of the sites I use frequently to find cheap and valuable “Pending Deletion” domain names is namejet.com. This site allows you to bid on domain names that are about to expire. If you are fortunate enough to be the only bidder in the auction, the domain is yours for the base price of $69. If there are several bidders the action moves to a closed private auction where the better man wins. Good luck.

Domain Page Rank – Another key factor in selecting an aged domain besides the keyword in the name, and the domain age, is the Google page ranking factor. If this domain is already highly ranked by Google, you are halfway there towards getting your site on the first page of Google. Keep in mind however; you still need to be “better” than your competition in other ways.

Another benefit of buying a “used” domain is that you inherit whatever rank the previous domain owner had acquired. While most used domains do not come with any rank, if you are particularly looking for this advantage, there are always some on the market that already have significant rank. The ranking system ranges from zero to ten and it is not unusual to see used domains with a ranking factor of five hit the “Pending Deletion” list.

Now, the ultimate domain name selection strategy would take advantage of existing domains of all three domain name factors: Keyword in Name, Domain Age and Page Ranks. In addition, you would also need to make sure that the keywords you are targeting meet the Three Golden Rules of substantial traffic, commercial value and low competition.

If you are thinking that this is too much for one person to handle, and run a business at the same time, you are right. The problem of selecting domain names with all the critical factors for getting your domain listed on the major search engines has become a huge industry not unlike the California Gold Rush of 1824. In this malaise, there are big winners and losers every day. Don’t make the mistake and enter the gold rush with just a pick and a shovel. Just like Larry Page and Google, the winners are using the latest technology with massive computers crunching massive amounts of data every second. Do like Larry and get some help.

Small Business Consultant: Keywords and the 3 Golden Rules

April 8th, 2010 by Dexter No comments »

golden ruleAs you wake up in the morning, you check your computer to get the latest statistics on your online business. Today you decide to look at your website traffic. Website traffic is the lifeline of online businesses. An increase in website traffic means more profit-making opportunities, lead generation, product promotion, and in increasing sales, which will lead to increasing your business revenue. After all, what matters in the end are sales of your product and services which will lead to more revenue and move you closer towards your goals and dreams that you initially had when you started your business.

So how do you go about getting that traffic to your website? Here are some simple strategies that will help you to find the right keywords for your business that will bring more traffic to your website and increase your revenue.

The first steps would be to define your Keywords. Keywords are what someone else would type into Google’s search engine box in order to find your product or service.

An easy way to define your keywords is to ask yourself the question: “If someone in my market was looking for my product or service, what would they type into the search box in Google?” If you have several products and services, you should do this for each one. You will then compile a short list of words and terms that will act as the seed point for your keyword list generation.

Once you have your keywords list, you can then begin to use some keyword tools to help you generate more relevant keywords and to analyze your keywords. This task can be rather time consuming if you do it manually, but there are some good keyword tools on the market that can help in gathering the data required . Whatever tool you use, there are three golden rules for choosing keywords that you should keep in mind.

1. Choose a keyword with substantial traffic. You should sort the keyword list by volume of traffic per month or per day, to see which keywords already have substantial traffic associated with it. It is important not to choose keywords with very little traffic as you might well get it very quickly but will not prove very worthwhile.

2. Choose a keyword that already has some commercial value. This is important because it allows you to choose which keyword to invest your resources into for the best desired outcome. Sometimes two similar keywords can differ significantly in commercial value, even when there are more searches in Google for the lower priced keyword. An example of this is the keyword “training a dog” has an average of 1,989 clicks per day with a value of $1.48 per click which gives it a commercial value of $1236.36 per day. On the other hand, “dog training school” has an average of 1,088 clicks per day at an average cost per click of $5.36 with a value of $2449.31 per day. So, even though “dog training school” has less traffic, It is still a more profitable keyword than “training a dog”.

3. Target Keywords with LOW COMPETITION. Determine who your competition is and what their strengths are. This will allow you to determine if you want to take them on or if you want to take a pass on this keyword. Since only the top ten websites will show on a page of Google, you must be able to get within the top ten to be visible to your audience. An eleventh place finish will not bring you any traffic.

Armed with this information, you are now ready to begin the process of incorporating these keywords in your online activities. You will need to include them on your website, blogs, email correspondence, and any other piece of information that is accessible online. Search Engines will eventually find them and associate them with your website and you will begin to develop some ranking for those keywords. One day when you wake up and check your website traffic, you will find that people from all around the world are finding their way to your website to find your products and services. All because of your keywords.

Small Business Consultant: Facebook Fan Pages

March 27th, 2010 by Dexter No comments »

With the recent announcement by Google that they will begin indexing Facebook Fan Pages into their search results, Facebook Fan Pages have become a big topic of conversations at many dinner tables as well as conference tables. It is important right from the start to point out that these accounts does not include Facebook user profiles, which most Facebook users have, so that information is still private.Creating a fan page is free and easy, but not all businesses believe they should have a Facebook Page. Here are the top 5 reasons why every business should have a Facebook Fan Page.

  1. Fan Pages are free. Facebook could easily have charged for this service and might do so some day in the future. Of course they realize that charging a fee upfront would limit their desire to dominate this market, and that providing a free host to business content would allow them to gain the leverage similar to what they now have in the consumer market.
  2. Fan Pages are easy to setup. Anyone with a Facebook profile has the ability to add a Fan Page to extend some content beyond the profile page. Facebook pages are publicly viewable, and have many of the same features as profile pages, but with information that is geared toward your company
  3. Facebook pages are indexed by major search engines and benefit from Facebook’s considerably high ranking. Fan pages will quickly get scanned by the major search engines and will get a high ranking because of the significance each search engine gives to Facebook. This page could easily outrank your own website without any major promotion.
  4. Pages can be updated remotely saving time. Many people are not aware that Facebook, like Twitter have many applications that allow them to update their social media accounts from one application. This is a tremendous time saver to busy business owners who often wear many hats. Many of these applications also allow you to update your Fan Pages remotely. Facebook Notes is an application that allows you to use RSS feeds from your blogs or other content sources to update your Facebook Page. The Twitter Application allows you to post your Twitter tweets simultaneously to your Fan Page.

Finally, if you wish to conduct business on Facebook, a Fan Page is the best way to go. Facebook’s rules explicitly ban Facebook users from using their profiles for personal gain. You can invite your friends on Facebook to visit your Fan page. In addition, friends, family, customers – anyone in the world with Internet access – can type your Fan Page Name into their web browser, on Facebook, and visit your Fan Page. Friends and other followers who come to your Fan Page expect to see a small amount of sales material. They do know that you are trying to promote yourself and are lenient in that regard, so there are no surprises.

Small Business Consultant: Lead Generation System

March 23rd, 2010 by Dexter No comments »

New StartIt’s the much awaited spring season again here in the Nations Capital and the evidence is everywhere. I took a quick drive by the Tidal Basin in Washington DC, over the weekend, and the cherry blossoms are getting ready to bust into full bloom just in time for the National Cherry Blossom Festival from March 27 to April 11, 2010. The past winter has pummeled us some record breaking blizzards and snow storms, and it is very refreshing to see the snow melt away and see the cherry blossoms begin to bloom. So, when one of my business associates told me recently that he was making a fresh start in one of his marketing strategies, I was curious. For years, he had been successful in his advertising campaigns where he spent large sums of money, both offline and online to driving traffic to his call center and website, collected leads and made some attempt to get a sale from that lead. This system had lead to some success, but with the economy taking a beating lately, he had begun to feel the pinch of old man winter. So what is the secret that enable my friend to magically move from the deep, dark bleary days of winter to a bright, sunny and blossoming days of spring in his business? The answer was moving from a sales first strategy to a lead generation strategy. Instead of sending all website traffic directly to a sales page and try and make the sale in one visit, he would drive traffic to a landing page where he provided a compelling opt-in offer that would help the prospect to achieve the results he was looking for. After the opt-in was successful, he would still send the prospect to his sales page. With this method, less people saw his sales page than did before, but his conversion rate for first-time visitors to his website was the same.

What was even more dramatic is that after communicating with and educating the non-buyers, his conversion among those was even greater than his conversion among his first time visitors. With the same amount of marketing dollars he was now able to get three times the conversion than he had previously gotten.

When he applied this strategy to his call-center, his results were the same. Instead of using his regular script and trying to make a sale on every call, he focused on getting valuable information from each caller. He would start with first name and zip code and then work his way to getting the full telephone number, mailing address and even email address if possible. This allowed him to follow up with all the prospects that did not buy on the first visit, but obviously could benefit from the products and services he had advertised.

Another huge benefit of getting the prospect information is that he was able to market to them using another media than the one they had originally contacted him on. If they contacted him by telephone and he now had their email address, he was able to market to them over the internet which lowered his costs and probably the competition, since everyone else was still trying to market to them through the telephone. If someone contacted him via the internet and he was able to get their mailing address, he would be able to market to them in a vacuum through direct mail since most of the competition was only using the Internet.

So as we begin the spring season, we see the unmistakable signs of fresh starts everywhere: The grasses are peeping up from the ground; the flowers are beginning to bud; the birds are re-appearing on the tree tops once again. Now is the time to get free from all that have been holding you back in your business. Just like the cherry blossoms in the Tidal Basin in Washington, DC, now is the time to break through and make a fresh start.
